Upgrading a ZIPAIR booking to ZIP Full-Flat

ZIPAIR has no elite status, no upgrade certificates and no airport upgrade list. A 'ZIPAIR upgrade' means moving your booking from a Standard seat to a ZIP Full-Flat fare and paying the difference for that flight. Availability is what decides it — there are only 18 of these seats per flight — so timing and checking often matter more than anything else.

1-866-884-3459 is our independent assistance number. It is not ZIPAIR Tokyo's official phone number; the airline itself takes inquiries at zipair.net/en/help.

How an upgrade actually works

  1. Check availability for your exact flight. Full-Flat inventory is per flight, per direction. Peak U.S.–Japan dates (late December, Golden Week, summer) sell out first.
  2. Price the difference. The upgrade cost is the current Full-Flat fare minus what you paid for Standard, not a fixed fee. On sale periods the gap can be surprisingly small; close to departure it can be larger than your original ticket.
  3. Request the change. Seat-type changes are handled through ZIPAIR's Manage Booking flow where offered, or by cancelling and rebooking when a direct change is not available. For agency-issued tickets the agency has to submit it.
  4. Re-check add-ons. Bundles and seat selections attached to the Standard fare may not carry across. We reconcile them so you do not pay twice for a bag.
Verify before you act. Fare rules, fees and route details on this page reflect ZIPAIR's published conditions as of September 2026 and can change. Always confirm the current rule in your booking or on zipair.net before making a decision.

When an upgrade makes sense — and when it does not

Worth it

Overnight eastbound legs (U.S. → NRT) of 11–14 hours; travelers with back or mobility issues; anyone connecting onward in Japan the same day.

Often not worth it

Daytime westbound legs if you sleep poorly on planes anyway; families with a child under 7 (they cannot sit in Full-Flat, so the family is split); bookings within a week of departure when the fare gap is widest.

Alternatives

Standard seats have 31-inch pitch; choosing an aisle or a row near the front is free or cheap. Extra cabin weight (up to 8 kg more) and a pre-ordered meal fix two of the three common complaints without a fare change.

One-direction upgrades

You can upgrade one leg only. A common U.S. pattern is Standard westbound (daytime, arrive Tokyo afternoon) and Full-Flat eastbound (overnight, arrive U.S. same morning). We price both directions separately and tell you which one moves the needle for your itinerary.
